Day 5

I woke up at 5:30 am this morning, got my laundry packed, and helped with breakfast by putting things down on tables and getting them all sorted. After breakfast, we sat down at a table to get down the Phosphate, Nitrate, pH strip, and pH meter information. Since we’re in a group, we all did something else to maximize efficiency and time. Additionally, we found the soil temperature and the GPS & elevation. Then we left by 9:40 am for the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute Museum.

I haven’t been to a Museum in a long time. I learned so much about the history of Native Americans, similar to the PowerPoint presentation Warren showed us a couple of days ago.

Although I do go to the Long house for feasts and know the foods, I'm not sure if it's much different, but I thought this was super interesting to see the different types of food throughout the year and the times of the year.

Not to mention, I found it very interesting that when Native Americans were in the boarding schools, I just figured that it was for mostly understanding English or learning how to read, basic stuff, but they also put them in a band, taught them how to sew, had a baseball team named "Indians" which I forget to get a picture of but the museum had so much. It was a wonderful experience, and if I were to go through it again, I'd for sure take my time next time.

When we got back from the museum, we had to set up the rest of our soil sample analysis for the field data sheets. Luckily for the group, we all did one part for the paper, and I used the Hanna industries kit to gather the Phosphorus, potassium, and nitrate levels from the non-vegetation soil. On the second night, I made a couple of mistakes, but after reading the manual, it wasn’t too difficult.

Other than that, it was a pretty simple day. For dinner, we had individual pizzas. It was Juan’s last day with us before he went to Tri-Cities. He was very helpful and was willing to answer any questions from any of us. So after dinner, we all sat beside each other at a campfire and roasted s’mores and talked about our future and our favorite parts of the trip so far. I’d say one of the more relaxing days, but a necessary one.
